Argentina will also be in Formula 3. It’s thanks to Franco Colapinto, who will complete the staff of Van Amersfoort Racing in the Formula 3 world championship. The South American will team up with Reece Ushijima and Rafa Villagomez and will have the task of helping the Dutch team in the double commitment F2-F3 with which for the first time will compete this year. After winning the Spanish F4 championship in 2019, Colapinto showed himself further in the Formula Regional European Championshipobtaining two victories in both 2020 and 2021, despite the commitment to the WEC which certainly took away physical and mental energy from the 18-year-old.
These are the words of Colapinto: “I enjoyed my debut in an F3 car in the end-of-season tests (made with MP Motorsport, ed). Obviously it is a more powerful car than the one I drove in Formula Regional, but at the same time the driving characteristics are similar to those of an LMP2. The notable difference compared to an LMP2, however, will be the management of the tires, but I like this aspect of racing. I can’t wait to get on track with Van Amersfoort Racing. They have an important history and have taken the double commitment very seriously. I am really excited to be part of this adventure, the whole team is motivated“.
Van Amersfoort Racing is only the third team to have completed its 2022 driver lineup. The others are Italians Trident (Edgar-Maloney-Stanek) e Press (Bearman- A. Leclerc-Crawford). One is missing in Charouz and Campos, two empty seats still for MP Motorsport and Hitech. Jenzer and Carlin have yet to announce the first name. The teams do not have many days to grab the performances of the drivers who are still free: the first tests will begin on March 2 on the Sakhir track – in Bahrain – and the World Championship will begin on the same circuit. Green light on March 19th.
