The qualifying session of the Monaco round, the fifth stage of the Formula 2 championship, ended with the absolute best time of Liam Lawson. The New Zealander of Carlin has in fact closed his performance in 1: 21.299resulting the fastest of his group and the second on the track later, thanks to a revised format on the occasion of the hunt for pole on the Monegasque city circuit.
For this occasion, in fact, they took place two distinct sessions: the fastest laps recorded in the first group, made up of the drivers with the odd number on the single-seater, they were then compared with those of Group B, made up of drivers with the even number. In the first session there were no particular twists, at least until the last second of the test: the leader of the world championship Drugovich, author of the best time up to that moment, in fact impacted sideways against the barriers at the exit of the last chicane, failing to cross the finish line. In addition to the actual damage, the Brazilian of MP Motorsport suffered the insult of Lawson and Iwasa, who in fact ousted the South American from the provisional pole, conquering the virtual front row. However, these performances were realized with the exposure of the yellow flag in the third and last sector of the track, and therefore the result remains under investigation by the Race Direction.
