The FIA continues the tests on the rear wings started in the Qatar GP. These are checks that will not have any feedback on the legality of the single-seaters under the 2021 regulation, but it is said that they are aimed at evaluating the deflection of the main profile, to study, possibly more stringent controls for next year.
The proposal was discussed by the Technical Advisory Comity and was then further clarified by the International Federation in a letter sent to the teams on November 19th. What is the test that is added to the checks required by the 2021 regulation?
The scrutineers measure the change in incidence of the trailing edge of the main profile of the rear wing by applying increasing loads with intervals of 5 kg up to a maximum value of 35 kg.
The measured deflection should not exceed the expected 2 mm when two profiled adapters such as the mainplane are subjected to a force towards the trailing edge. Attempts made after qualifying at Losail had demonstrated the compliance of the solutions on all ten controlled single-seaters.
Nonetheless, the tests will be repeated again in Jeddah and Abu Dhabi to define, possibly, new more stringent values to be applied to the 2022 single-seaters next year to avoid any bending of the elements that go well beyond that of the materials, looking for some indisputable aerodynamic advantages.
This campaign seems to have been activated by continuous reports to the Red Bull FIA: the Milton Keynes team, in fact, disputes the excessive flexibility of the main profile of the Meercedes W12 when the mobile flap is closed, allowing a separation of the two elements greater than 15. mm required by the rules.
The additional checks, however, did not show any anomalies, so it is legitimate to ask what the Red Bull technicians in Saudi Arabia will attack …
