When the sprint races were introduced in Formula 1, there were mixed reactions. old school fans of the sport usually don’t like it, while the new viewer is ready for some more wheel-to-wheel action in a race weekend. It’s not called a race weekend for nothing. As is often the case, the FIA is drawing its own plan and is now doubling the number of F1 sprint races from three to six in 2023.
Unfortunately, the motorsport body has not yet announced where the extra sprint races will take place. Whether there will be an extra race in Zandvoort remains to be seen. The sprint race was introduced in 2021 at the Great Britain Grand Prix. This was then immediately won by Max Verstappen. We can only vaguely remember what happened the next day at the Grand Prix.
What does Max Verstappen think of sprint races?
In an interview with MotorsportMagazin Verstappen recently indicated what he thinks of the sprint format. It becomes clear that the Dutchman is not a fan. “The emotions on a Sunday must be special. That’s the only day you should be racing. That’s how I grew up too. The sprints we’ve had so far haven’t really changed anything when it comes to the results. Everyone starts on the same tire and ends the sprint in the same position as where they started.’
