Contact between Kevin Magnussen’s Haas and Sergio Perez’s Red Bull caused a serious accident in the opening stages of the Monaco Grand Prix.
The red flag was necessary to clear away the many debris from the track and to fix the barriers seriously damaged by the heavy impact.
Fortunately the pilots escaped the accident unharmed, but they were probably even more fortunate the photographers who were crowded precisely at that point of the route and who saw Sergio Perez’s car hit the fences.
The viral video and the words of the photographers
There were several photographers present beyond the barriers that were the scene of the accident and among them was José Maria Rubio from Brandwho told his newspaper: “I had pieces of carbon fiber falling out of my hair when I showered in the evening and I even had some in my socks”. The Spaniard also spoke about his colleague Andrea Diodato, who was taken to the medical centre: “We were taking photos just as the car was coming towards us. They took him away in an ambulance, but he returned later limping and with a bandage. Many of us had small injuries”.
Diodato himself then reassured everyone on Instagram: “Motorsport is dangerous. Today went quite well, just a huge bruise and a few cuts, but it could have been much worse. I’m fine and I really thank everyone who wrote to me.”
And the videowhich immediately went viral, spread by Armand Mazloumian, testifies to the great risk experienced by photographers.
