GP Canada, details of the Montreal F1 circuit
The Canadian Grand Prix made its debut on this circuit in 1978 and since then it has become a permanent fixture on the Formula 1 calendar. The race takes place on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, one of the most fascinating and challenging tracks in the championship which is located on an island in the San Lorenzo River and is named after Gilles Villeneuve, the legendary Canadian driver who left an indelible mark in the history of Formula 1. Gilles is also the father of Jacques VilleneuveF1 world champion in 1997.
From a technical point of view this route is long 4,361 kilometers and presents 14 curves, divided into six on the left and eight on the right. The direction of travel is in clockwiseand one of the most famous features of the circuit is the infamous “Wall of Champions”. This barrier, located at the exit of the final chicane, has seen numerous world champions crash into it, thus earning its name.
Another crucial point is the length “Casino” straight, where cars reach high speeds, offering excellent opportunities for overtaking. The “Casino” chicane is particularly technical and requires great precision from the drivers.
Racing in Montreal is known for high brake wear and the possibility of accidents which can lead to the entry of the safety cars. As a result, tire and pit stop management strategy is crucial to achieving a good result. The cars must find a balance between low downforce to maximize speed on the straights and higher downforce to tackle the twistier sections of the circuit.
The all-time track record at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal is 1’10″240set by Sebastian Vettel during the 2019 qualifying, while the fastest time in the race is 1’13’078obtained by Valtteri Bottas on Mercedes, again in 2019.
