The rumors have occurred in recent weeks and now, on time, the official confirmation has arrived: the marriage between Porsche and Red Bull will not be celebrated. The negotiations that went on for months seemed to lead to an announcement in Austria which then did not and never will be.
The German company has issued a statement in which the causes that led to the rupture of relations are explained in a concise and clear way:
“Over the past few months, Porsche AG and Red Bull GmbH have been discussing the possibility of Porsche entering Formula 1. The two companies have now jointly concluded that these talks will no longer continue.”
“The premise was always based that the partnership would be on an equal footing, which would include not only a partnership on the engines, but also on the team. Something that has been possible to achieve ”.
The VW Group sports manufacturer concludes with a projection on the future: “With the latest changes to the rules, Formula 1 remains an attractive series for Porsche, which we will continue to monitor”.
Porsche, therefore, has no intention of staying out of the world of Grand Prix, but is looking around to connect with other teams, notably Williams and McLaren. Red Bull has claimed its desire to remain an independent team, without constraints dictated by a manufacturer.
Porsche made it clear that the Stuttgart facility also wanted to be part of Red Bull Racing and not just Red Bull Technology, the company that designs and builds the single-seaters and soon also the power units in Red Bull Powertrain, the department made specifically to make 2026 engines.
Porsche did not like the idea of remaining only an engine partner at all: the feeling is that the current management of Red Bull, Christian Horner and Helmut Marko, who would have obtained the support of the Thai partner of the Austrian empire, prevailed. to avoid losing control of a team that is dominating the scene.
The management of an F1 team in a tie between two partners was considered inefficient, so despite Porsche’s desire to set foot in the Circus, the agreement that was given for sure is definitively broken. Red Bull will continue with the power units supplied by Honda until 2025 and then will provide its structure with its own engine. And it is not certain that at this point the Japanese manufacturer will be able to return to the field, perhaps with a non-“invasive” role as they want in Milton Keynes.
Porsche will now look around, after having seen the door shut in the face by Red Bull, especially since it has also been “overtaken” by Audi when entering F1: the House of the Rings has already formalized its presence in the GPs with its own power unit that will be entirely built in Germany and the reference team will be Sauber, given that the Swiss team will close the partnership with Alfa Romeo to begin a gradual involvement of Ingolstadt in its own structure.
A historic and prestigious brand in the motorsport world like Porsche did not deserve the treatment it received in its approach to Formula 1. But those who believe they have… expelled the Stuttgart company are very wrong. And we’ll hear about it soon …
