Red Bull had worked on the rear aerodynamics in Baku, choosing to use an uncut flap on the low-downforce wing as had happened in Monza, preferring instead to “trim” the only element of the beam wing. The Milton Keynes team had associated this change with the introduction of a keel in the lower part of the diffuser.
Sergio Perez, until the accident with Carlos Sainz that forced him to retire, was in the running for a podium finish, giving the impression that he had regained some confidence in the RB20, a difficult car that has given very little satisfaction to Max Verstappen, fifth at the finish line behind Lando Norris, his challenger in the fight for the world championship.
The Dutchman took responsibility for an overly extreme change to the setup between FP3 on Saturday morning and qualifying, a choice that made the car undriveable at the front with sudden losses of grip.
It should not be surprising, then, that the technicians directed by Pierre Waché are looking for a way to give the RB20 that balance that seems to have disappeared from Imola onwards. The trend with ground effect cars has been to cage the high temperature generated by the disc and caliper during braking in carbon baskets, so as to avoid heat propagation to the rim and, consequently, to the tyre. The technicians had thought of using two baskets in each corner to create a lung of fresh air, while the ducts carried the hot air out.

Giorgio Piola’s image, on the other hand, shows us a variation of the trend: the internal basket of the Red Bull has been opened by a noticeable slit that has the task of heating the cavity that was supposed to remain cool. The world champion team, therefore, wants to bring heat back to the tires by passing through the rim, rediscovering concepts that worked with the 2021 single-seaters.
One thing is certain: in Milton Keynes they did not give up on the technical superiority of McLaren and they want to fight to the end to support the lead of Max Verstappen who has 59 points to defend.
