It looked like a big deal was about to explode, but it seems the bomb has turned into just a… firecracker. The McLaren rear wing has been put under the microscope after images from F1TV showed that the mobile flap could deform at high speeds on the leading edge in a small portion near the lateral attachments.
Here’s a McLaren image from F1Tv that sparked doubts about the flap’s movement

The images from the MCL38’s rear camera car suggested the separation of a section of the mobile flap from the main profile, such as to reduce the resistance to advancement with an increase in Oscar Piastri’s maximum speed. Some have spoken of a minimal rotation of the flap on the wing support, others have advanced the hypothesis of a mini-DRS that was not controlled by the pilot but that acted independently as the speed and, therefore, the load increased. Finally, some have feared a deformation of the trailing edge of the main profile.
It was reasonable to think that some team could present a request for clarification to the FIA, but the teams we asked excluded any intervention, a sign that they did not give particular weight to the solution that has sparked a lot of interest on social media. On Sunday evening there were many voices that spoke bluntly of the illegality of the MCL38.
At this point we expect a position from the International Federation that puts an end to the matter with a technical explanation of what could be observed in the images of the Azerbaijan GP.
One thing is certain: on Sunday evening the FIA pulled out the McLaren #81 that won with Oscar Piastri in the Azerbaijan GP for the most thorough checks that a car classified in the top ten is subjected to at the end of each race. The technical commissioners who dismantled the rear braking system did not deem it necessary to carry out further checks, a sign that for Jo Bauer everything was in order.
