The 2022 single-seaters weigh 43 kg more than last year: the FIA has raised the minimum limit to 795 kg, a mass never previously reached by a Formula 1. Yet the race to gain weight is by no means over, indeed .
In fact, in the meeting of the team principals, a further increase between 5 and 10 kg was discussed: all the cars except, perhaps, one, fail to reach the minimum threshold, so an agreement would have been reached between the teams to ask to the International Federation an increase in the minimum weight at the regulatory level.
The request only makes sense in the logic of cost savings: in a financial regulation that imposes a budget cap, the team principals believe that reaching the limit weight would involve studies and research on every single detail of the machine that could lead to expenses that could jeopardize the planned work is being developed on single-seaters, so it would make more sense to raise the minimum limit to prevent someone from being tempted to set out on that road.
The proposal to be brought to the FIA must have the support of eight teams: not only Alfa Romeo likes the idea. According to rumors, the C42 would be the only F1 to be in line with the 795 kg and any change in the rules would penalize those who had come close to the limit.
We remind you that on a track like that of Barcelona 10 kg of weight are worth about three tenths of the time per lap: we are therefore talking about a factor that could affect performance.
