The business world is in mourning for the death of Leonardo Del Vecchio, 87, founder of Luxottica and president of the Essiliux group, father of six children. Del Vecchio had been hospitalized in intensive care at the San Raffaele hospital in Milan for a few weeks.
Milanese, the son of a family of Apulian emigrants, Del Vecchio spent his childhood in an orphanage in the Milanese city. At just 26 years old, he gave life to Agordo at Luxottica, the company that established itself worldwide in the eyewear field until the merger of Essilor, which in 2017 became EssilorLuxottica.
Del Vecchio, named Cavaliere del Lavoro in 1986, was Mediobanca’s reference shareholder and for Forbes he was the second richest in Italy. Passionate about engines, he has always been close to Ferrari, a team to which he has never skimped on support with his brands.
John Elkann, Ferrari president, recalled Del Vecchio:
“Leonardo was a great entrepreneur, who was able to build an industrial group without equal, bringing Italian ingenuity to excel all over the world. Always close to Ferrari with enthusiasm and passion, I remember him with deep respect and admiration “.
