The Monza circuit has already won the 2024 Grand Prix. This is the message that came from the traditional press conference that precedes the Italian GP, which saw the presence of ACI president Angelo Sticchi Damiani, the president of the Lombardy region, Attilio Fontana, plus other personalities representing the institutions and, at the end, Stefano Domenicali. The first challenge has been won, the work that began on January 8th was completed in time to host the F.1 weekend, but starting next Monday there are other tests to face.
The resurfacing of the track, together with the construction of new underpasses, is the first important step in a renovation project that will also have to involve the services, starting with the stands. The racetrack hopes to be able to start work as soon as possible, the goal is to be able to put a model facility on the table when it comes to discussing with Liberty Media the renewal of the contract to host Formula 1 starting in 2026.
“Our enemy is time,” Angelo Sticchi Damiani stressed, “usually the contract renewal with Liberty Media is addressed well in advance, but in the situation we find ourselves in we will have to hurry, and not only in completing the work.”
Liberty Media’s expectations have been known for some time. “We know that the facility will have to be taken care of even in those details that favor television images – continued Sticchi Damiani – today more space is requested for hospitality and for the Paddock Club, but we cannot always act freely, I would like to remind you that we are moving in an area subject to many constraints, and this is the game we are playing at this moment”.
Teamwork is needed. This is the message coming from Monza, a team with ACI but also representatives of local authorities. Alessia Cappello, Councilor for Economic Development and Labor Policies of the Municipality of Milan, who spoke at the presentation, quantified the induced income linked to the Italian Grand Prix event at 178.8 million euros.
The Municipality of Milan benefits from 30% of this amount, the rest is spread across the territory around the racetrack with the involvement of the provinces of Lecco and Como. “In a few days we will have a clear picture of the returns”, underlined Sticchi Damiani, a message to the local authorities called to do their part on the renewal table.
The Lombardy Region will be part of the game. “This marriage must happen – Fontana commented – we have demonstrated with facts the will to move forward and to keep up, we want the long history between Formula 1 and Monza to have a great future, and we will do everything to offer a facility at the top of quality also in terms of services”.
An opening that also finds support in the responses of Stefano Domenicali, pleasantly surprised by the work completed in time for the 2024 edition of the Italian Grand Prix. “We will work to keep Monza in its place – he underlined – but there are no official positions, all the parties involved must make their commitments and respect them”.
