A few minutes from the start of the United States Grand Prix, the starting grid of Austin had welcomed the return of Martin Brundle after the restrictions for Covid-19. The British, former pilot and today sent for Sky Sports F1, however, had not received a warm “welcome” for the occasion, as evidenced by an event that occurred before the start: in an attempt to interview one of the VIPs present on the track, specifically the American rapper Megan Thee Stallion, the bodyguards of the latter had pushed the same Brundle, then vented on social networks to ask for more respect towards the media.
Two weeks after that episode, the Briton – author of 9 career podiums – got his revenge: starting from the last GP in Mexico City, the personalities on the grid will in fact be obliged to give interviews or statements to the journalists and media present. A regulatory innovation introduced by Formula 1 and known as “Brundle clause”, explained as follows by the person concerned: “New rules have been introduced – commented – which provide every celebrity on the grid he will no longer have to have his own bodyguards, and they will be forced to talk to me. Rather, I prefer that they ignore me, honestly ”.
“I like being able to interview some VIPs who, to be honest, take advantage of the visibility of F1 without having a great passion for the sport. I know that, at home, there are millions of fans who wish they were in their place as more passionate than them. Today though my moment of fame has arrived: I am ignored by Megan Thee Stallion and badly turned away by a mountain of men, then I am picked up by a Malfoy impersonator who was no doubt on the grid for the first time. I posted a tweet about it and got 5 million interactions. I don’t understand any of this, honestly ”.
Yet, despite having held a television role since 1997, Brundle himself confessed to never reviewing his interventions: “My grid walk it’s an alter ego that I don’t recognize, which is why I don’t watch them – he concluded – in that moment I become a cheeky person who, in ten minutes of live television, I go to the track with my goals without rehearsals and without scripts ”.
