The weather forecasts on Montecarlo give rain for the day of the Monaco GP. But the F1 teams favor the set-up that can make the most of it in qualifying. Here because
The position on the starting grid in Monaco is known to represent an extremely important strategic variable: here more than on any other track in the F1 World Championship. Sacrificing it on the altar of any race strategies has practically no meaning, given the extreme difficulty in overtaking. Only the rain can in fact create the conditions so that – given these premises – a shuffling of the cards can occur with respect to the values that the cars express in qualifying. To an external observer, the hypothesis of a possible wet race on Sunday, it might seem logical to hypothesize that some teams could adopt a set-up that is a compromise between the dry and the wet one.

In reality, a choice of this type would definitely see the cons prevail over the pros. This is because even in the wet, the chances of overtaking, with the exception of cases induced by mistakes of the opponents, would still be extremely reduced. Paradoxically, a choice that favors the eventual race strategy could make more sense for the less competitive cars in qualifying, where the cost / benefit balance would tend to be more favorable. The leading cars will therefore tend, on the other hand, to favor the more performing set-up on the flying lap, without in any case exaggerate the set-up of the car, in relation to its balance, in order to manage the deterioration of the tires in the race.
