After his success in Austria, Charles Leclerc is aiming for a leading role in the French GP, which will take place at the Paul Ricard circuit on the weekend of 24 July. Optimism characterizes the words of the Monegasque Scuderia Ferrari driver in the traditional Thursday conference, and also concerns the world championship. “The goal is to win the championship – said Leclerc -. We have no plans to lose any more points. The 38 points gap on Max is significant, but there are many races ahead: we won’t have to make any more mistakes and if we don’t have reliability problems we can certainly close the gap on Verstappen ”.

On the eve of the transalpine event, Leclerc explains: “I have a lot of confidence in my team. After two very hard years, 2020 and 2021, we are back to compete at the highest level – explained the 24-year-old -. In recent races we have made very few mistakes. In the past, I think for example in Monte Carlo, we had some problems, but this also happened to the other teams fighting for the win. We are back in the spotlight, it is normal because we are here to compete for the great result ”.

In the 2022 season, an essential “hub” could have been the first place won in Austria on 10 July. The Scuderia Ferrari driver does not deny it. “In Austria we got a precious victory, especially for me, after five complicated races – said Leclerc -. We also gained points compared to Verstappen ”. What are the objectives for the French GP? “I grew up near this racetrack, of which I have wonderful memories, even before Formula 1. In the last two editions in France we have struggled, especially for tire management. This point will be an aspect on which we will work in detail, starting from the first free practice session ”.
the future: tracks and regulations

Meanwhile, the riders involved in the press conference on Thursday commented on two topical points: the risk of losing the GP of France or that of Belgium, from 2023 (for reasons of renewal of contracts with the host circuits), and the management of ” track limits ”, repeatedly at the center of debates. “What if I had to choose Spa or Le Castellet? It is difficult for me to answer. I would say Spa, for the culture of the track, which I prefer overall, but here in France I have many memories also linked to my beginnings with karting ”. As for the limits of the track, the Monegasque explains: “I think that keeping the curb as a reference, as we did last year, is better. With the white line, given the height of the car, it is very difficult to understand when you are at the limit or when you go beyond five centimeters ”.
