Sao Paulo – Former Formula 1 driver Wilson Fittipaldi has died at the age of 80 at the Prevent Senior hospital in southern Sao Paulo. Fittipaldi had been hospitalized since December 25th, when he was suffocated by a piece of meat, went into cardiac arrest and was resuscitated. The local media reported it.
The driver, older brother of two-time world champion Emerson Fittipaldi, contested 38 Grands Prix, achieving his best result in the German GP in 1973, when he was seventh. After two years with Brabham, together with his brother he founded the first, and still only, South American F1 team, Copersucar Fittipaldi with whom he raced in 1975. After leaving F1 for five seasons he dedicated himself to Stock Car racing. His son Christian Fittipaldi was also an F1 driver in the 1990s.
