The Silverstone weekend is as long as it is unpredictable, but Ferrari confirmed that they started the weekend with the best starting point. It was a different Friday than usual, with the rain making the track impracticable for a long part of the FP1 session.
It was not the excessive intensity of rainfall that convinced teams and drivers to stay in the pits, but the truly atypical conditions of the track: initially the rain fell in the first two sectors, saving the last stretch of the track, then the rains settled. focus only on the second sector. In these conditions the slick was too risky and the intermediate overheated after a few laps.

The day’s activity was thus rescheduled in just sixty minutes of the afternoon session, which saw intense activity on the track. Topping the day’s standings was Carlos Sainz, who immediately appeared at ease with the F1-75 despite the difficult conditions.
In FP2 the rain allowed a respite, but the strong wind greatly affected the work of the teams and riders, as confirmed immediately by very clear radio team. Sainz managed both the fastest lap and the long-run well, putting two tenths between himself and Lewis Hamilton, second by surprise.

The ranking shows Charles Leclerc only fifth, a lying position and determined by a small but crucial unexpected event. While the Monegasque was launched in the qualifying simulation, a message appeared on the display of his car, and Charles immediately lifted his foot. Once back in the pits, the Ferrari technicians discovered that the alarm was unfounded, but by the time he got back on the track Leclerc had lost the ‘plus’ guaranteed by the set of soft tires.
“It will be a much more important FP3 session than usual”, they let Ferrari know, a little so as not to raise too many expectations but also because tomorrow a final free practice session is announced in better environmental conditions, i.e. little wind and track. dry.

For the qualification the weather guarantees very little, with a 50% chance of rain that leaves every scenario open. For this reason, both Leclerc and Sainz were among the few riders to ride a few laps in FP1 with intermediate tires, a way to take references that could be useful tomorrow. In the Scuderia’s garage nothing was left to chance, and less than twenty-four hours before qualifying, Ferrari is considered the car to beat in the Silverstone paddock.
Intense Friday night for Red Bull

The fourth place of Max Verstappen and the seventh of Sergio Perez do not offer a great Red Bull in great shape. We are at the first steps of the weekend at home, but above all Perez complained about not having found on the track the indications that emerged in the work carried out on the simulator. “We are very far from what we expected – commented Checo – we need to understand what is happening. We have some suspicions on the aerodynamic front, but obviously I can’t go into too much detail. The goal is to get back to having the right confidence in tackling the fast corners, and I think we can do it ”.
Verstappen pointed to the inability to work in the morning session, an aspect that affected the day’s program.
“It’s always a bit more complicated when you skip a session – explained Max – you end up having less time in the afternoon shift to make changes, but we know what we have to work on, and that’s what we’ll do overnight. . But if it rains tomorrow in qualifying, we’ll start over with a blank sheet of paper ”.
With all the prudence (this time shared) by the teams and drivers of the two top teams, this time it is Red Bull called to a more important intervention on the setup. Ferrari was overall more at ease in all three sectors at Silverstone, and even the long-run of Leclerc and Sainz did not show any drop in performance. The soft used by Sainz has had the expected degradation, but this is an aspect that everyone will have to take into account in the 52 laps scheduled for Sunday.
