F1 Canada, the Qualifying report
Same time, to the thousandth. It’s George Russell however, to take pole position in Montreal, putting Mercedes back ahead of everyone on the grid after the 2023 Hungarian GP: 1:12,000 for the Briton, who achieved the time with the used tire a few minutes before Max Verstappenconquering the second pole of his career.
A sensational rebirth for Mercedes, anticipated today also by Lewis Hamilton’s best time in FP3: the future Ferrari driver did not repeat himself in the final and had to settle for seventh place. Always very good Verstappen to maximize the potential of a Red Bull which becomes alarming if you look at Sergio Perez, once again eliminated in Q1 (16th time).
Lando Norris, who is only 21 thousandths behind Russell, is a whisker away, nevertheless he is “only” third, on the second row together with teammate Oscar Piastri. Nice surprise Daniel Ricciardothe old man is back Honey Badger in “his” Montreal (where he won the first GP of his career), followed by Alonso, Hamilton, Tsunoda, Stroll and Albon.
The other big news from qualifying is the sensational double exclusion of Ferrari from Q3: Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz they pay for an SF-24 that was never on the ball during the weekend, slow on the flying lap and what’s more without new red rubber in the hot phases of Q2. The Monegasque and the Spaniard will be 11th and 12th respectively, the double elimination in Q2 has not happened since the 2021 Spa GP.
