Verstappen, Montreal starts badly
FP2 in Montreal lasted just over 20 minutes for Max Verstappenwhich opened on the radio with the track engineer Gianpiero Lambiase stating “I smell smoke“.
The Dutchman wasn’t wrong, because as he returned to the pits, smoke could clearly be seen coming out of the rear of the RB20. The car, placed on stands in the garage, was dismantled by the mechanics: at the moment the team has hypothesized a ERS failure (Energy Recovery System).
Before the start of FP1, Red Bull replaced the entire power unit (except ES and CE) on both Verstappen’s car and Sergio Perez’s, introducing the third engine. However, the action on the track was limited for everyone: tomorrow’s FP3, if it takes place in dry conditions, will be fundamental for the teams.
