One of the first verdicts that will come from Friday in Austin is that relating to the state of the track. The riders are divided between those who do not believe that the bumps (which affected the MotoGP weekend three weeks ago) will be a big problem, and those who fear that the disconnections of the asphalt could put the mechanics of the single-seaters in crisis.
The parts that the teams will carefully monitor are transmission, suspensions and also the power unit, exposed to the risk of ‘overspeed’ if the bumps prove particularly difficult.
However, Austin circuit manager Bobby Epstein confirmed that the track will not present any problems after the work done (at the request of the FIA) to mill the track in the most problematic spots during the MotoGP weekend. The interventions concerned curves 2, 3, 4, 6 and 10.
“The bumps will not be a problem for the single-seaters – clarified Epstein – Michael Masi made an inspection on the track and asked us about the last interventions we completed between Monday and Tuesday. Maybe there could still be some problems with the bikes, but the single-seaters will be able to run regularly. “
“To meet the next two-wheeled appointments, we have planned further interventions that will definitively settle all the problems in view of the 2022 season”.
Among the riders who expressed doubts is Pierre Gasly, and Epstein answered the Frenchman’s questions: “Let’s wait and judge, after the first session everyone will have a clearer idea. I could also tell some drivers that if they ride in Monaco… they will have no problem doing it here too ”.
Among those who, on the other hand, do not pose any problems, there is Kimi Raikkonen, always very direct in his evaluations …
“There have always been bumps – he clarified – in some editions maybe a little more pronounced than others, but it’s not that there aren’t any bumps on the other tracks. I think in the end everything will be okay, if the MotoGP riders have raced there we should be okay, I think it’s much scarier to manage bumps on two wheels than to do it with our cars. Maybe we will feel some jolts, but it should be okay ”.
