It was an unusual baptism. Kimi Antonelli faced his first test behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car in a Christmas setting, complete with snow that hit the Red Bull Ring. On the first day (Tuesday) the junior Mercedes driver completed only a few laps in heavy rain, then the precipitation turned to snow, making the track impassable.
The second day of testing was decidedly better, and it was possible for Antonelli to fit the slicks, completing an intense day at the wheel of the 2021 Mercedes W12 in the new combination with the 2024 livery.

“The first test behind the wheel of an F1 car is an incredible experience – commented Antonelli – I enjoyed every second. On the first day it was not possible to respect the plans, the arrival of the snow made the track impassable, but fortunately the second day was much more favourable. The track became dry again and I was able to complete a good number of laps. I can say it was very, very fun.”
The Austrian tests were the first of a test program that will see Antonelli and Mercedes stop on various European tracks. The team has not released any official statements (both on the Red Bull Ring tests and on the program) but the next appointment will be on the Imola circuit.
