Who knows if Cyril Abiteboul will have Renault in his heart after being kicked out of his role as F1 team chief executive late last year. Certainly, however, the transalpine manager will have the lozenge logo on his right calf for all of his existence. Thanks to Daniel Ricciardo.
Because the bets are paid and Abiteboul has kept a promise made last year to the Australian driver. The bet was simple: Cyril would get a tattoo if Daniel made it to the Formula 1 podium before the end of last season.
Ricciardo, as you will remember, with the RS20 was brilliant third both in the Eifel GP at the Nurburgring and in the Emilia Romagna GP held in Imola. Two heavy podiums, the first for Renault after returning to the Circus in 2016.
Two joys that at least partially mitigated the transalpine CEO’s disappointment at Daniel’s decision to leave the Enstone team to replace Carlos Sainz at McLaren, given that the Spaniard would have joined Ferrari.
The pledge to be paid seemed to have been forgotten, also because in the meantime the “terrible” Australian had forced the current McLaren CEO, Zak Brown, to tattoo the Monza circuit on his left arm with the date of Daniel’s amazing victory in the GP d’Italia with the MCL25 M.
In reality, Abiteboul did not shy away from paying his penalty: at the beginning of the week the Frenchman made an appointment with Ricciardo from a tattoo parlor in London. And the McLaren driver did not hesitate to record a video testifying the event. Initially it looked like Daniel wanted a tattoo on Cyril’s back, but eventually he would be content to see a particular Renault logo designed by artist Victor Vasarely.
The debt has been … paid to the skin.
