369.5 … even. 21 Grand Prix were not enough to define a clear advantage in terms of points between the two contenders at the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship. Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen will compete for it at Yas Marina, home to the last round of the season to be held at the Grand Prix. Abu Dhabi Award.
An ending like not seen for years. Indeed, probably decades. Two riders on equal points who are fighting for the title in the last race, albeit with a small but important advantage in the hands of Max Verstappen: if the two both end up out of the race, the title would go to the Dutch Red Bull because the author of a victory more than the rival of Mercedes, 9 to 8.
Yas Marina will also be awarded the Constructors title, which, however, sees Mercedes strongly at an advantage thanks to the good result obtained on Sunday in Jeddah with the victory of Hamilton and the third place in extremis clawed by a Valtteri Bottas never tamed and finally – for Mercedes – incisive until the last corner.
28 points of advantage can be many, but also not too many, considering that Yas Marina – at least on paper – is a track on which the RB16Bs arrive as favorites due to their characteristics. Of course, the Milton Keynes team will need a double and it may not be enough, but in today’s Formula 1, after what we have seen this year, anything can happen.
Ferrari’s third place in the Constructors’ World Championship is increasingly solid. 307.5 points against the 269 of a McLaren that gradually faded after two-thirds of the season as a protagonist. The Reds will be able to manage this advantage without too much trouble, waiting for a 2022 that will necessarily have to be much better.
How the Abu Dhabi weekend will unfold
The weekend of the last race of the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship will once again have a classic format, i.e. with three free practice sessions, qualifying and the Sunday race.
It will start on Friday 10 December with the first free practice session lasting 60 minutes which will start at 10:30 in the morning and end at 11:30. In the afternoon, here is the second session, also of 60 minutes, which will start at 14:00 Italian and finish at 15:00.
Saturday will kick off at 11:00, with the third and final free practice session. These too will last an hour to finish at 12:00. Then, fire to the powders. The traffic light in the Yas Marina pit lane will turn green at 14:00, starting the qualifying. The checkered flag of Q3 – barring unforeseen events – will be displayed at 15:00 with the starting grid already outlined.
The only appointment on Sunday remains the race, but with a capital g. The last act of 2021 will start at 14:00 with the traffic lights on the grid going off and will last 2 hours, closing at 16:00. At that point – barring complaints – the 2021 F1 world champions will be crowned.
