The two Russian TU-160 bombers flew close on Friday through the airspace above the North Sea for which the Netherlands is responsible. As a precaution, two Belgian F-16s took off to intercept and escort the Russians, but in the end that was not necessary. The British had already received them and guided the aircraft further.
The Russians came from the north and were previously accompanied by Norwegian fighters. For several years now, Russian bombers have again been flying more often through the airspace for which the Netherlands is responsible.
Belgium and the Netherlands are jointly responsible for the surveillance of the airspace of the Benelux countries. They alternate every few weeks. There are always two F-16s ready for this task. The Belgian Air Force is currently responsible for surveillance.
