Less than 40 kilometers from the central point of the city of São Paulo, the “Crater of Colonia”, which is located in the Parelheiros district, in the south of the city, was generated by the fall of an extraterrestrial object, as indicated in the scientific article Morphological aspects, textural features and chemical composition of spherules from the cologne impact crater, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The study was conducted by geologist Victor Velázquez Fernandez, from the School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities at the University of São Paulo (USP).

The research is recent and has shown more detailed evidence on what generated the 3.6-kilometer-diameter crater, about 300 meters deep, and a 120-meter uplifted rim. The interior is littered with sediment and the edge covered with vegetation. The structure remained hidden until the early 1960s, when aerial photos, and later satellite images, showed its near-perfect circular shape.
The impact of the extraterrestrial body was only confirmed, however, in 2013, through microscopic analysis of sediments collected at different levels of depth. This study and others carried out later were also conducted by Velázquez Fernandez.
One of the aspects highlighted by the research is that the beads (small spheres), which vary between 0.1 millimeter (mm) and 0.5 mm, were found inside the crater. Usually, debris is thrown out when an object falls from the sky.
For scientists, the explanation is that the energy of the impact turned the rocks existing at the site into a dense and superheated cloud. This material was thrown upwards, froze and fell back to the base of the newly formed crater.
The scientific article was published in March of this year and can be read in the magazine Solid Earth Sciences.
The work is also signed by researchers Celso B. Gomes, Marcos Mansueto, Leonardo AS de Moraes, José Maria A. Sobrinho, Rodrigo F. Lucena, Alethéa EM Sallun and William Sallun Filho.
