Alisa Khramova, Associate Professor at the Department of Commerce and Trade at Synergy University, taught Russians how to read a barcode correctly. According to her, it contains unique information about the product, allows you to check for its authenticity and find out its production process, reports the Prime agency.
“The bottom line is that a unique number is officially assigned to each enterprise. There are European and American barcodes. For example, EAN is the European barcode standard used to encode product and manufacturer identifiers. This code is called a superset of the American UPC standard, ”said the expert.
Khramova revealed the order of reading the 13-digit European barcode. The first three digits determine the country of production, the next 3-5 are the enterprise code, then there is a product code of 4-5 digits indicating the color, article number, and so on. The last digit is a control one, with its help, when read by a scanner, the authenticity of the product is determined. If the very first number is 2, this means that the code is intended for internal use.
The expert explained that the discrepancy between the country on the packaging and the barcode may indicate that the product is fake. She recalled that in a crowded market and huge competition, the use of unique codes is extremely important. However, the difference in numbers does not always mean a fake, for example, the factories of one company may be located in different countries or the barcode is registered in the country where the product is most often delivered.
Earlier, Khramova told about “unusual” methods of deception at the store’s checkout. According to her, one of the most common methods of such fraud is an extra item on the check. Also, the seller may add foreign goods to the check, give incorrect change or scan the wrong barcode.
