The city hall of São Sebastião (SP), one of the municipalities most affected by the heavy rains that hit the north coast of São Paulo over the weekend, entered a state of attention. According to the alert issued on the night of Wednesday (22.Feb.2023) the reason for attention is the expectation of new rains this Thursday (23.Feb).
The Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo informed that it expects “heavy rains, accompanied by electrical discharges, strong gusts of wind and hail” until the weekend. The forecast for the volume of rain in the city this Thursday (Feb 23) is 35 millimeters. The storm has already left at least 48 dead on the coast of São Paulo, 47 in São Sebastião and 1 in Ubatuba (SP).
The expected volume is less than the accumulated rainfall recorded in the early hours of Sunday (Feb 19), which reached 682 millimeters in 24 hours on the coast of São Paulo – the highest in the country’s history, according to data from Cemaden (Centro Nacional de Previsão of Disaster Monitoring). In São Sebastião, it was 626 mm.
“The Civil Defense always recommends that the population, if they notice land displacement or a possible disaster, leave the risky location and contact 199”says the note.
The Justice of São Paulo determined that the State can forcibly remove families that refuse to leave the risk areas on the north coast, although the action has been suggested to be allowed only “in last case”.
The Governor of Sao Paulo, Tarcisio de Freitas (Republicans), asked tourists to take advantage of the good weather to leave the north coast of São Paulo. The recommended stretch for the exit is Rodovia dos Tamoios.
At the end of the afternoon on Wednesday (Feb 22), the government of São Paulo and the Brazilian Army completed the clearing of the Rio-Santos highway, with a forecast for the total release of traffic for vehicles in general on this Thursday (Feb 23) ).
Sabesp (Basic Sanitation Company of São Paulo) also restored water supply in the cities on the north coast of the State served by the Company: São Sebastião, Ilhabela, Ubatuba, Caraguatatuba and Bertioga.
The last report card of the São Paulo government, released at 8 am this Wednesday, counted 1,730 displaced (who left their homes, but do not need shelter and may be staying with family or friends) and 1,799 homeless (who are in public or private shelters) as a result of the rains.
