Exercise Could the pool water at Helsinki’s Swimming Stadium be cold in winter? The city is now exploring the possibilities of opening

The majority of the costs of the swimming stadium in the winter would probably consist of heating the water and saunas, as well as staff salaries.

Helsinki keeping the swimming stadium open all year round would require at least hundreds of thousands of euros. The cost is of interest now, as the possibility of keeping the swimming stadium open over the winter is being explored.

The Uimastadio’s open year-round proposal was chosen as the target for the implementation of the Omastadi poll organized by Helsinki’s citizens. The proposal received more than five thousand votes and the implementation of the proposal was funded by a hundred thousand euros.

It is now being clarified what the conditions are for being open all year round from a business point of view. In addition, ecological heating energy alternatives are being explored.

In hand there are no recent calculations of what it would cost to keep a swimming stadium open all year round. The previous calculations were made in 2008.

“It was calculated that heating a large pool to 20 degrees Celsius alone would cost about 400,000 euros in October-April. It’s very hard to estimate what it would cost today, and we don’t want to guess that. The schedules for the new assessment have not yet been discussed, ”says the sports venue manager Petteri Huurre.

He says there would be big costs in addition to heating the pool or pools from wage costs and the use of electricity. Saunas in particular would absorb electricity.

An open swimming stadium needs cash registers, cleaners, swimming supervisors and technical staff.

When thinking about keeping open all year round, you also need to think about a model that would be open. Would the large pool be heated to 20 degrees Celsius or would it be a cold pool that would just be prevented from freezing.

Cheaper would be achieved if only a smaller diving pool were used and if its water was kept only open but not much heated.

Opening hours would also have a big impact on costs. Would the swimming stadium be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., or just in the afternoon. The longer the swimming stadium is open, the higher the staff costs, of course.

Huurre says that technical factors also need to be clarified, such as whether the current heating capacity is sufficient to keep the water in the large pool at 20 degrees Celsius and 15 degrees Celsius.
