SPD leader Lars Klingbeil knows that the Omikron variant will be a strong political challenge and therefore calls for vaccinations.
Berlin – The SPD chairman Lars Klingbeil described the exclusion of mandatory vaccination at the beginning of the corona vaccination campaign as a mistake.
“I personally did that too,” he told the editorial network Germany (RND). He believed that many more people would get vaccinated than has actually been the case to date. “That’s why I have always said with great conviction that there will be no compulsory vaccination. That was a mistake. But I think it’s important that politics can learn something new. “Definitive statements are of no use to anyone:” That only creates disappointment when the castles in the air burst. “
Klingbeil called for vaccinations and boosters. If the vaccination quota were to suddenly increase from the current 70 percent in Germany to 95 percent, the planned introduction of mandatory vaccination would not be necessary, he said. “But I don’t see that at the moment.” He doesn’t want to experience another winter like this, “that society will experience such a severe setback as it is now at Christmas 2021”.
Klingbeil said he knew how difficult it was to restrict yourself again in the second year of the pandemic. “But the new Omikron variant will now be a great challenge for all of us.” Vaccinated people would also have to reduce their contacts – “many are already doing that now, even if the new rules won’t apply for a few days”.
On Tuesday, the federal and state governments decided to limit the contact to ten people at private meetings only for December 28th. Individual federal states are already moving a few days forward. dpa
