Bolivia’s Minister of Justice, Cesar Siles, announced this Thursday (3) that former leftist president Evo Morales is being investigated for rape of a vulnerable person and human trafficking.
“We observe with indignation serious crimes that seek to remain unpunished. I am specifically referring to a girl raped at 15, 16 years old”, said the minister, at a press conference.
According to the Bolivian government, the leader of the opposition to Luis Arce’s government had impregnated the victim, a 15-year-old teenager, in 2016.
According to Siles, because of the rape, “[a adolescente] gave birth to another girl and the father recognized on the birth certificate is Mr. Evo Morales Ayma. There is an open case that is under investigation.”
The case became public this Thursday (3) and soon had repercussions after the case’s prosecutor, Sandra Gutierrez, reported that she was removed from the case for requesting the arrest of the country’s former president. The action, however, was blocked by a Guarantees judge.
The investigation arose from a police intelligence report opened on September 25. After the arrest request was annulled, no judicial authority commented on the future of investigations against the former left-wing president.
In X, Evo Morales published: “I’m not surprised or worried. All neoliberal governments, including the current one, have threatened me, persecuted me, arrested me, tried to kill me. I’m not afraid! They won’t silence me! “, reported AFP.
