The Conference League is UEFA’s new club-level competition that would rank in order of importance and impact behind the Champions League and the Europa League. At this point in the preseason, the qualifying rounds for this new tournament that opens this season have already begun.
In Spain, Villarreal is the team that due to its position in the league should have qualified for this tournament, but the achievement by the team groguet of the Europa League grants him a direct ticket to play the Champions League. The presence of five Spanish teams in the top competition at club level and another two in what was formerly UEFA, will prevent any Spanish team from participating in the first edition of the Conference League.
From its first round in the competition, a total of 184 teams will participate, of which 46 will come from teams eliminated in the other two international level competitions. A curiosity is that for the group stage of 32 teams there are none that qualify directly, that is, 22 of them will come out of the previous rounds of said tournament and the remaining 10 from those teams that fall in the previous phase of the Europe League.
The creation of this competition also alters the composition of the Europa League groups. Instead of 48 teams in the first group stage it will be composed of 32 teams divided into eight groups.
As with this competition, the matches will be played on Thursdays. When this season ends we will meet the first winner of this long tournament that has already started to be played. That team will have a guaranteed place in the group stage of the Europa League for the following year.
So far these are all the details that we know about the competition. It does not differ much in terms of format from the rest of UEFA competitions.
