Everything we know about Zeta Halo has to do with the expanded Halo universe. This story has spans thousands of years, and it goes far beyond the Master Chief. Zeta Halo is a Halo ring never before explored in games, and connects to a story set hundreds of thousands of years before humanity’s war with the Covenant. But it has a very particular history in which they relate to humans before the disappearance of the Forerunners. Installation 07, or Zeta Halo as the UNSC calls it, was built by the ancient Forerunners as the ultimate weapon intended to assert their control over the galaxy which they then used to end the parasitic Flood. Like the other rings we know of. Surely you already know that Forerunners are an advanced alien species that preceded modern humanity and the Covenant.. But the funny thing about this facility is that it once housed humans.

To be sure, what we know about Zeta Halo does not come from video games but from books in the expanded Halo universe. Much of humanity’s secret history with the Forerunners and Installation 07 is contained in the novels that make up Greg Bear’s Forerunner Saga. The Forerunner Saga tells the missing story of the Forerunners, 100,000 years before the war that begins with Halo: Reach between humans and the Covenant. These novels are a key piece in understanding what the relationship between the Forerunners and humans was like according to ancient history, as well as providing additional background for the events of Halo 4 and 5.
The first novel in the trilogy is Halo: Cryptum, and was published in 2011. This was followed by Halo: Primordium, the second installment, which went on sale in 2012. The last book of the trilogy, Halo: Silentium, was published in 2013. These three books can give a contribution definitive for the history of Halo that begins with Halo 4. One of the criticisms made of this saga was precisely not having delved into the story, expanding the universe of Halo for those who had only played video games. With these books, many of the events of Halo 4 and 5 can be better understood.

The Zeta Halo’s history dates back thousands of years before the events of Reach. As detailed in the books, this facility has a great diversity of environments, and you can find Flood-related labs, Forerunner research labs, and prisons. Plus, low-tech human settlements and the Mendicant Bias AI core, the same one that appears in Halo 3’s terminals. This seems ideal for the idea 343 Industries has in mind. Halo infinite will be the biggest and most ambitious Halo game yet. According to the premise that has been proposed, players will be able to explore much of the ring and the map that was shown in the gameplay, which means that with Halo Infinite, 343 Industrie bets on giving players freedom to tackle the targets around the ring.

Humans and Forerunners
Something we also know about Zeta Halo is related to the relationship between humans and Forerunners. Installation 07 is one of the oldest human habitation sites in the universe. In the Halo lore, humanity is 150,000 years old and made space flights long before what we consider prehistory. They spread to other solar systems but ended in a war with the Forerunners. Humans lost that war and literally went back to the Stone Age, with the story on Earth effectively rebooting until it led to the distant future story set in the games.
But some humans were also allowed to live in Zeta Halo, because it is called in Bear’s novels, the conservation measure. This was created by the Forerunners to index all the intelligent species in the galaxy. Bear’s novel, Halo: Primordium, follows the humans living in Installation 07 and shows how the Forerunners subjected humans to grotesque experiments to test their immunity to the Flood.
Installation 07 was fired twice, one for Mendicant Bias against the San’Shyuum, who are the species that would form the Covenant in the future and who are known in games as the Prophets. The second time it was fired it was part of a larger plan to fire all seven of Halo’s rings. The second shot wiped out every species in the galaxy for millennia. Fortunately, the few Forerunners that remained alive managed to repopulate the galaxy with the species they had saved with the conservation measure.
Zeta Halo in Halo Infinite
The events of the Forerunner saga connect the Didact, which is the main enemy of the Halo trilogy created by 343 Industries. The Didact is a Forerunner political leader and military commander. His war against humanity begins in Halo 4 later. It was in stasis from shortly after the time the rings were actuated the second time. With it also comes the mantle of responsibility, a philosophical point of view that directed the entire Forerunner culture. The conflict over who has the Mantle has been a major source of plot in the 343 Halo trilogy.
At the end of Halo 5 Cortana technically took over the Mantle by appointing herself head of an AI faction and taking control of the Guardians that were built by the Forerunners to protect the Mantle. With all the facts adding up in this ending ending with Cortana’s disappearance, it’s pretty clear why Installation 07 is the right choice for the end of a trilogy that began with the Forerunners. Although there are things left out, this is a good account of what we know about Zeta Halo.
