“We can already be happy that Volkswagen has confirmed the creation of its battery gigafactory in Sagunto (Valencia)”, they say from AVIA, the Valencian automotive cluster, which until now had remained silent about the tractor projects framed in the Perte of the electric vehicle (VEC).
The design of the Perte VEC, whose bases were published in the BOE on March 18, however “is focused so that it is the automobile manufacturers who choose the partners within each initiative,” they recall from the association.
Until the deadline for submitting applications is closed, in May, it will not be known exactly what the components of each tractor project are, nor the budget they will have.
In the presentation of the results of Seat, where the announcement of the investment of 7,000 million by the Volkswagen Group to electrify Spain was made, the president of the brand, Wayne Griffiths, stated that this amount would be private, “since the public amount is still It has not been approved.”
“Until the calls are closed,” he says
Donia Razazi, a consultant specializing in the approval of European projects, including Perte, “the details will not be known, although the rules of the game are clear.” In his opinion, “the auxiliary industry has been somewhat left out of Perte, when Tier 1 suppliers have an industrial fabric that is almost as relevant as that of the manufacturers.”
Regarding the concession of new electric models to the Ford plant in Almussafes —just 60 kilometers from Sagunto—, the Valencian cluster cannot confirm it “until the brand’s European headquarters in Cologne (Germany) do so” .
If it receives them, Almussafes would triumph over the rival with which it competes for the award, the German factory in Saarlouis, and its industrial future would be guaranteed until 2040.
However, they point out that “everything points” to the fact that the blue oval factory will receive them, with indications such as that the Segura Group, also belonging to AVIA, will be the one to build the battery support for the brand’s electric models; that Ford and the Volkswagen Group have signed a collaboration agreement on electric vehicles; or the very creation of the battery plant.
This, which will have a capacity of 40 GWh per year, will supply the zero-emission urban models that will reach the Spanish assembly lines in 2025 and, according to Griffiths, “it will be operational as soon as possible. Otherwise we will have a logistical problem.
When asked directly about the weight of the cooperation of the brands in the decision, Griffiths dodged the question and stated that “the criteria for choosing Sagunto was due to logistical, economic and personnel criteria.”
