Forecasters warn that record snowfalls await the capital in the coming days, snowdrifts will grow by another 10 cm, and visibility on the roads will not exceed 500 meters. Cyclone “Olga” in Moscow: when will it come, how long will it last
The North Atlantic cyclone Olga is approaching Moscow, which will bring record snowfalls to the capital. As Evgeniy Tishkovets, leading specialist at the Phobos weather center, explained, the cyclone will arrive in the capital on Wednesday, February 7, and will last at least a day.
According to the forecaster, visibility in the city will drop to 500 meters, and about a quarter of the monthly precipitation is expected to fall: 9–12 mm.
It is assumed that the record of February 7, set in 1995, may be broken in Moscow. At that time, 9.5 mm of precipitation fell in the capital.
Snowdrifts at the VDNKh base weather station will grow by 7–10 cm and for the first time reach a height of 50 cm, while wind gusts can reach 15 m/s.
“Baric bottom”: atmospheric pressure in Moscow on February 7
Atmospheric pressure, according to the forecasts of Evgeniy Tishkovets, will collapse “to the very baric bottom.” With the norm being 747–748 mmHg, it will be only 717–727 mmHg, which is also close to the 1995 record.
Snowfalls in the Stavropol region: consequences
The bad weather also affected the Stavropol region: here snowfalls and strong winds damaged buildings and trees. In the capital of the region, Stavropol, snow began to fall during the day on February 5 and fell all night. Already in the evening, problems on the roads began in the city: public transport got stuck on inclines, and traffic jams in the city, according to services, amounted to 10 points.
The governor of the region, Vladimir Vladimirov, addressed residents of the region in his Telegram channel and stated that the forecast was unfavorable.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations warns that the disaster will continue on February 6 and 7; parents were allowed not to take their children to schools and kindergartens.
Storm in Astrakhan: what happens when it ends
The south of Russia also found itself under the blow of the cold front of the next Atlantic cyclone: a hurricane with wind gusts of up to 32 m/s is expected in Astrakhan. The storm began on the evening of February 5, and so far the storm is only gaining momentum. According to preliminary forecasts, showers will continue all day on February 6 and 7.
Gusts of wind cut the wires, leaving some houses without power. As stated by the governor of the Astrakhan region, Igor Babushkin, 33 settlements have already remained without power. More than 30 thousand Astrakhan residents are sitting without electricity. According to him, power engineers have already begun to eliminate the consequences of the rampant disaster.
Dozens of fallen trees are known to have blocked the passage and damaged power lines and cars.
Showers and storms in Sochi: what happens on February 6
On the night of Monday, February 5, stormy downpours covered Sochi. As a result, a landslide occurred on the railway track between Dagomys and Loo, blocking train traffic for a day. By the morning of February 6, railway workers and utility services managed to partially clear the rubble. Trains run in reverse mode, the delay is no more than three hours, Russian Railways notified.
