There seems to be no peace for the Formula 1 Race Director, Michael Masi, at the center of numerous controversies in recent weeks. The Australian executive is in the eye of the storm in particular for his handling of the ‘Interlagos case’. The duel between the two contenders for the world title, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, was in fact debated for a long time, complete with a request for revision – then rejected – presented by the Brackley team and a meeting of Masi himself with all the drivers to try to clarify the guidelines to keep in a wheel-to-wheel battle situation against another car.
This briefing, however, according to many participants – first of all Hamilton himself, part of the story – does not seem to have clarified the ideas to the drivers. Many complained of too much discretion ‘granted’ to the commissioners in the evaluation phase and above all of the different way of considering certain episodes with similar dynamics. The McLaren team principal was also critical of Masi, Andreas Seidl, who underlined how the handling of the Brazilian episode and its subsequent consequences left everyone rather unsatisfied. “I think overall, all parties involved are not happy – commented the German manager, as reported by the site RaceFans – simply because there is no clarity“.
“We have all understood that it is true that each case is an individual case and that everything that is important in that specific situation must be examined. But at the same time I think it should be possible to have a little more clarityAdded Seidl. The McLaren boss hypothesized that, to simplify at least in part these assessments, a sort of ‘general case study’ could be drawn up, depending on the leads and the type of situations that arise.
“It will be very important to have a new meeting soon together with all the parties involved, perhaps thinking of a new document to indicate what is expected to be legal or non-legal. Perhaps it is possible to define five or six different standard cases, depending on the different track layout “. A discriminating factor that emerged in fact in the Losail briefings is the difference between the cases in which the escape route is in gravel and others in which it is in asphalt, as was the case in Brazil for example.
