It’s not going well for Raymond van Barneveld. After the painful elimination at the World Darts Championship, the five-time world champion has now also tested positive for corona. He will remain in quarantine in London for the next few days.
“Unfortunately, I have to report that I have tested positive for Covid-19. At the moment I have a fever and I am struggling with enormous fatigue”, Van Barneveld said via Instagram know.
Van Barneveld said he had no symptoms during the match with Rob Cross, but afterwards he felt short of breath and developed a fever. ,,I immediately called my manager Ben de Kok and he advised me to go directly to the hotel and not to give interviews so as not to take any risks. We have already discussed the situation with the PDC and Rob Cross.”
Earlier in the day, Van Barneveld already made a statement. After the defeat to Cross, he skipped all interviews on Thursday evening. “I am still motivated and will come back stronger next year,” the 54-year-old from The Hague said at the time.
“I want to thank all fans, both in the public and on social media, for their support,” Van Barneveld continued. “I am grateful to you.” The five-time world champion took the lead against Cross (1-0 in sets), but then missed many opportunities before losing 1-3 in sets. Van Barneveld left the podium in Alexandra Palace with his head bowed and felt the pain again as usual.
,,The result was not as hoped,’ said Van Barneveld. ,,It was emotional for me to be on the podium again, with all the fans chanting your name. This was the moment I have worked so hard for in recent months. worked.” Finally, the former postman wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. “2022, we are coming.” Although he would have imagined Christmas differently.
