In a statement Saturday evening, von der Leyen said the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius remains “within reach.”
In a previous statement, the President of the European Commission considered that the “Glasgow Charter” adopted by 200 countries at COP26 has “kept the goals of the Paris Agreement (2015) alive, by giving us an opportunity to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.” .
“We’ve made progress on the three goals we set ourselves at the start of COP26. First, get commitments to reduce emissions to keep the 1.5°C limit. Second, reach the $100 billion per year goal of climate finance for developing and vulnerable countries, and finally get Agreement on the Handbook for the Use of the Paris Climate Agreement.
“If all the long-term commitments announced in Glasgow are implemented, we can contain global warming to well below 2°C. So we still have to do more to get next year’s climate conference in Egypt on the way to 1.5°C,” von der Leyen added. .
And she added, “This makes us confident that we can provide humanity with a safe and prosperous place on this planet. But there will be no time to lose, there is still difficult work ahead.”
She recalled the European Union’s commitment to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030 compared to 1990, and to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
