The European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides, called on the bloc’s 27 health ministers, on Monday, to use the summer period to prepare for an expected new wave of Corona virus infections in the fall and winter.
“In light of the potential for a worsening of the epidemiological situation, it is important that we all remain vigilant,” Kyriakides said.
And she continued, “The summer months must be used to take the necessary public health measures that will support us during the next phase of the pandemic in the fall and winter.”
She said that while people in Europe enjoyed an unrestricted summer over the past two years despite the increase in infections, efforts to contain the pandemic must continue.
She pointed out that the new wave is characterized by increased rates of severe illness and hospitalizations.
Kyriakidis called for increased efforts with regard to basic vaccines and booster doses, and preparations for future vaccination campaigns based on vaccines against Omicron mutant, monitoring and testing throughout the year.
