European Football Championships | France knocked off Belgium and secured a place in the quarterfinals

France will probably face Sweden or the Netherlands in the quarter-finals of the European Football Championship.

France was the second team to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the Women’s European Championship. It beat Belgium 2–1 in Thursday night’s late match in Group D.

France took a 1–0 lead in the 6th minute of the match Kadidiatou Diani with a goal in the match played in Rotherham. Belgium equalized in the 36th minute. Janice Cayman pushed the ball past the French goalkeeper from the penalty area by Pauline Peyraud-Magnin.

France’s 2–1 winning goal came at the end of the opening half. Clara Mateo gave a corner kick, but Belgium managed to clear the first attempt. The Paris FC player gave another cross to the goal, and Griedge Mbock Bathy butt the ball Nicky Evrard to guard the goal.

In the last preliminary group match against Iceland, France can focus on the upcoming quarter-final match, where they will probably face Sweden or the Netherlands.

Italy and Iceland shared the points in the important early evening match of Group D, but the final result 1-1 left a bitter taste for the Italian players.

Iceland got a dream start to the match played in Manchester, when representing Bayern Munich Karólína Lea Vilhjálmsdóttir flashed his team into the lead in the third minute of the game after a long throw from the line.

Italy, who lost 1-5 to France in their opening match, equalized in the 62nd minute by Valentina Bergamaschi by hitting, but Iceland’s goalkeeper Sandra Sigurdardóttir stopped the team’s other attempts. Assisted by Bergamaschi’s goal Barbara Bonansea came closest to the winning goal, but the Juventus striker’s shot hit the post.

Finnish judge Lina Lehtovaara refereed his second match of the tournament in Manchester.

In the final round, Italy and Belgium will meet in a mutual match.
