Helmarien the first EC tournament match against Spain turned out to be as difficult as expected on Friday, despite Spain having two world-class players on the sidelines for the match. How difficult the match would have been for Finland if he was chosen as the best player in the world Alexia Putellas would have built Spain’s attacks or if Spain’s top scorer Jenni Hermoso would have been deciding them?

According to HS statistics, Spain won the possession percentage with 72-28. With such readings, it is extremely difficult for Finland to get a point or points.

Having started as a right winger for Finland Tuija Hyyrynen according to Finland must improve its ball control on Tuesday in Finland’s second preliminary group match against Denmark.

“We have to play longer attacks,” Hyyrynen said after Saturday’s practice.

Hyyrynen commented on Finland’s opening match after Saturday’s practice.

All of the attacks that led to Finland’s shots came from quick stabbing attacks. Four of Finland’s attacks ended in a shot, and all shots came as a result of passing chains of only two or three passes.

“Counterattacks are our strength, but we should be able to rhythm them in such a way that we also have another way. You have to take the pressure off your box.”

“We had a dream start to the game and the goal taps were immediately open. It was something we had dreamed of. We got a lot of buzz from it at the start of the game.”

Finland the first attack ended in a goal at 49 seconds when Linda Sällström finished Anna Westerlund after a long vertical feed. In the opening period, Finland got a couple more places, but was otherwise under pressure from Spain throughout the match.

It was difficult for Finland to control the ball, and this is also reflected in the percentage of successful passes (66 percent).

“Spain is one of the best teams in the world, and you could see it on the pitch. They kept the ball at their feet, and the passes clicked into place. Our playing was only about defending.”

Spain won the shots by no less than 33–4. Nine shots were blocked by Finland, and Spain missed the goal 11 times. The readings also tell about how Finland was able to keep Spain out of its defensive formation.

“We knew that they would try to build 3-2 superiority situations on the wing, and we managed to organize them into 3-3 situations quite well. We were prepared for it and had good support from the midfield to the wing.”

When Spain was unable to break the Finnish defense with short passes and along the ground, it concentrated the ball precisely in the goal-scoring sector. Spain scored three goals by heading the ball into the goal. The first came from a corner, the second from a long attack and the third from a free kick. Spain completed the fourth goal with a penalty kick in extra time of the match, when Elli Pikkujämsä broke as hard as possible.

“Of course, when there are so many concentrations, it is difficult to defend them all. A few mistakes backfired, and we learn from them. We have to really aggressively hit the balls. Maybe our defensive play in our own penalty area became a bit passive.”

Hyyrynen headed the ball in front of the Finnish goal.

“Especially in area defense in special situations, we have to attack the ball aggressively.”

According to Hyyrynen, Finland did everything they could on Friday, but it was not enough against a world-class opponent.

“We gave everything on the field. We fought and drove teammates. We can hold our heads high even though the result was not what we expected.”

From steam still smiled a day after the match, the atmosphere of the European Championship opening match. The team received congratulatory messages before the match. On the way to the match, the team’s players had smiles on their faces, and the excitement of the match grew even more from the sight of the fans.

“Of course there was excitement in the air. It was easy to connect with teammates and smile with them. There was no need for words at that point when everyone knew how it felt.”

Tuija Hyyrynen smiled while listening to the Maamme song at the Milton Keynes stadium.

“It was wonderful to stand listening to the Maamme song and feel the atmosphere of the stadium. It was really great in every way. It was great to see family and friends in the stands. I noticed them already during the warm-up.”

Hyyrynen was also part of the competition team in 2009 and 2013, and he has been able to draw experience from his previous competition experiences. Before the previous European Championships, it was difficult for him to sleep when his mind was running around so much.

“Back then, I didn’t know how to relax and save energy for games. I have learned from it and I have tried to create the same relaxation and calmness in my teammates. You have to be able to count the laps sometimes.”

To the team he has encouraged first-timers to ask for advice if they have any questions.

“It is important that no one is left alone. If you notice that someone has a bit of a head down, then everyone together lifts such a player up.”

Hyyrynen first got to see top football when he was 15 years old watching the European Championship in England in 2005. Seeing the games was important to him at a young age. It opened up to see possibilities.

“It was a turning point for me. We had the junior European championships then, and I had just transferred to the HJK women’s team at the time. We won the first championship.”

“I was a fan of players at the European Championships, and we went to watch all the players’ warm-ups. Maybe then I thought to myself that I want to be there one day. I was the biggest fan Laura Kalmaria, From Anne Mäki and Sanna Valkosta. Now the circle closes when I’m back in England.”

Five for the past year, Hyyrynen played in Italy for Juventus and saw the development of top women’s football from the sidelines.

“It is no longer the case that a couple of countries dominate the sport, but now there are many countries that can win EC gold. I think we have just seen the beginning of the potential of women’s fudis. The sport is developing rapidly, and Finland needs to join the development.”

“We are going to beat Denmark and challenge. They also had a tough first game, losing 0-4. We want to beat Denmark, we are betting everything on it and we believe that it is possible.”

Finland-Denmark on Tuesday at 19:00 Finnish time. YLE TV2 will show the match.
