CNN said that the winter and Ukraine are two challenges that have raised the level of concern in Europe over the fate of the Union, adding that European officials are concerned about the possibility of the collapse of this bloc.
She explained that fears were reinforced as the continent approached a harsh winter that might reach the point of darkening, due to measures to reduce energy consumption resulting from plans to abandon Russian gas.
She highlighted: “The division of the member states of the Union was reinforced by Bulgaria’s position on the crisis and its statements regarding its readiness to negotiate with Russia’s Gazprom to resume the delivery of natural gas.”
In this regard, observers and analysts asked a question, “Will the Bulgarian position be the beginning of a hernia in the Union’s position on the Ukrainian crisis?”
In answering this question, Mustafa Al-Ammar, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Christian Democratic Party in Germany and an expert in international security, said that the European Union is experiencing “great pressures, tension, delay and bureaucracy in making decisions.”
Al-Ammar added, in his speech to “Sky News Arabia”: “We may be facing a crisis that history has not witnessed before… although alternatives exist and are clear, such as activating and using clean nuclear energy reactors.”
He continued: “What Bulgaria is doing lacks European dialogue, and we always say there must be a collective decision because the idea of the European Union requires that countries be with each other through thick and thin.”
But Al-Ammar returned to say that “the Ukraine crisis united us by taking bold decisions, but with regard to the gas issue, there must be a stronger presence of the European Union by giving guarantees and implementing projects so that all countries feel that they are equal.”
The expert in international security concluded his speech by emphasizing that “full dependence on Russia is completely unacceptable, and this is our position as well as the opposition…and therefore the European Union must find various alternatives to get out of the crisis…and this matter will not be achieved without dialogue and negotiation.”
