European automakers oppose tariffs on electric vehicles from China
Leading European automakers held a closed-door meeting with their counterparts from China. He writes about this with reference to the local newspaper “Huanqiu Shibao” RIA News.
Participants from the PRC expressed their serious dissatisfaction with the preliminary decision of the European Commission on additional duties on Chinese electric vehicles. They called on the Chinese government to take countermeasures and consider increasing duties on large gasoline-powered cars imported from the European Union.

In turn, European companies also opposed tariffs on electric cars from China and expressed hope for an early start of negotiations that would avoid an escalation of the trade war. Both sides of the meeting also called for opposition to trade protectionism.
The European Commission (EC) announced on June 12 that it would increase tariffs on electric vehicles from China by up to 38 percent from July 4, depending on the level of companies’ cooperation in the EU investigation. Chinese automakers have been accused of violating WTO rules and manipulating the market through government subsidies. Experts estimate that new EU tariffs on imports of Chinese electric cars will cost Beijing almost four billion dollars.
