Europe Foreign Minister Haavisto: Finland to chair OSCE 2025 – Live broadcast in progress

As chairman of the OSCE, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, Finland would like to revive the so-called spirit of Helsinki from 1975.

From Finland will be the OSCE chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe in 2025, the foreign minister said Pekka Haavisto (green) at a press conference in Helsinki on Tuesday evening.

Finland has sought the presidency because 2025 will mark the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki OSCE meeting.

Helsinki The OSCE meeting in 1975 was president Urho Kekkonen a long-standing foreign policy milestone that strengthened Finland’s international position.

President Sauli Niinistö called for a modern version of the spirit of Helsinki last March at Helsingin Sanomat In his guest pen writing.

“Etyk was also seen as contributing to change – the strengthening of freedom, democracy and rights throughout the continent,” Niinistö wrote.

“In 2025, the 50th anniversary of Etyk is ahead. Will it just be a memorial service, or will we aim for a more ambitious one? ”

OSCE is a loose security organization and, in principle, huge in territorial coverage. It is often said that “it reaches from Vancouver to Vladivostok”.

The OSCE has 57 participating countries. It can be said that this is both the strength and the weakness of the OSCE.

Its strength lies in the fact that all the countries important for European security, from Russia and the United States, are gathering at the OSCE table.

If the OSCE countries reach an agreement or even be able to discuss constructively at the same table, it will be a victory for the security of Europe as a whole.

Organizing such a meeting would, of course, be an important diplomatic achievement for Finland.

OSCE large size is at the same time its weakness. If the positions of the participating countries are far apart, the conditions for sensible action may not be met.

The 1975 OSCE meeting in Helsinki was hosted by President Urho Kekkonen.
