Europe Belarus intends to impose sanctions on EU and British airlines

Belarus plans to impose sanctions on the European Union and Britain, Belarus’s foreign ministry told Monday news agency Reuters.

Sanctions target EU and British aviation companies, according to Reuters. The Foreign Ministry also announced that the country will ban the import of certain goods from countries that have imposed sanctions on Belarus. Belarus did not specify which countries or products were involved.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs the announcement is a response to new sanctions imposed by the EU. On 2 December, the EU announced sanctions against, inter alia, Belarusian Belavia.

The background is the ongoing migration situation on the Belarusian-Polish border. During the autumn, thousands of people have arrived in Belarus with the help of the authorities and have hoped to enter the EU across the border.

Western countries have accused Belarus of machining migrants from the Middle East to EU borders. The Belarussian regime has denied the allegations. According to the West, Belarus has brought migrants to the border in retaliation for the sanctions imposed on the country.
