Euro elections|Up to 70 percent of Sdp’s candidates are women.
Ladies are in the majority as candidates for the European elections for the first time, according to a recent report by think tank Toivo.
Sdp has the most female candidates. Up to 70 percent of the party’s candidates are women. The Greens, the Left Alliance, the Christian Democrats and Liike Nyti also have a female majority in the candidates. The male majority, on the other hand, is on the lists of Basic Finns, the Center, the Coalition and the Rkp.
The candidates of the Left Alliance are the youngest. Their average age is 36.7. The oldest candidates are at Liike Nytit, whose candidates’ average age is 47.
Young age groups are especially emphasized in the candidate group of the Greens and the Left Alliance, while in the coalition it is the older ones. The coalition and the center nominated the most candidates over the age of 50.
“The differentiation of the parties in age and gender structures does not bode well. At the same time, the topic selections and agendas differ between the parties and the discussion connection is broken,” the report reads.
The report in 2019, female candidates performed better than male candidates in all parties, with the exception of Sdp and Rkp.
“Was it a coincidence related to the selection of candidates, for example in the case of famous candidates, or are the European elections more favorable to female candidates than other elections?” the report reflects.
According to the report, the parties generally nominate younger candidates in the European elections than in other elections. When looking at the candidates who were elected, the younger age groups are not emphasized in this group in the same proportion. In the 2019 European elections, there were almost as many candidates aged 40–49 as those aged 30–39, but their number of votes was about three times higher.
“So it is relatively easier for young people to run for office in the European elections than in other elections, but more difficult to succeed,” the report states.
According to the report, this is mainly due to the fact that the European elections are national elections in which the entire country is one electoral district. Thus, it is difficult for a candidate who is not known nationally to gather a large number of votes.
Members of Parliament there are significantly more candidates in these European elections than in 2019. There are 31 MP candidates in the 2024 European elections, in 2019 there were 14 of them.
In all parliamentary parties, a clear majority of candidates have been candidates before, but not in the European elections. According to the report, the number of candidates from outside politics is clearly lower than in the 2019 European elections.
In these elections, the most candidates are running from the constituency of Helsinki, both absolutely and relatively.
According to the report, the capital station will explain the matter.
“Which is why there are significantly well-known and/or otherwise suitable candidates for the European elections living there,” the report says.
