5.4% of Italians declare that they have made the vegetarian choice. This figure – slightly below the average of the last 9 years, from 2014 to 2022 (5.9%) – shows a slight decrease compared to last year (-0.4%) among the ‘addicted’ of the green diet. There is a 9.7% of ‘repentant’, in the sense that, although they are no longer so, they boast a past as vegetarians. At the tricolor tables sits a share of people equal to 1.3% who declare themselves vegan. While the vast majority (83.6%) say they are not vegetarians, opting for a traditional diet or other types of diet. The Eurispes Italy 2022 Report photographs the food regimes of the Belpaese.
From 2014 to today, the choice to be vegetarian has undergone a fluctuating trend in Italy, registering its maximum peak in 2016 with 7% of adhesions and its minimum in 2017 with a percentage equal to 4.6%. The report also highlights another aspect: there are those who also want to involve their families in the choice of the green diet. The attempt to involve loved ones in choosing a vegetarian diet saw 62% of those who declared themselves vegetarians as protagonists. 51.8% tried to ‘break through’ on their partner, 43.1% tried to involve friends and 29.2% tried to persuade their acquaintances. Those who declared they were not vegetarians were asked to express their opinion regarding this type of diet: 80.7% considered it a personal choice to be respected.
