Politico: EU May Cancel Visa-Free Travel with Georgia Due to ‘Democracy Decline’
The European Union (EU) has threatened Georgia with the possible abolition of its visa-free regime due to the “decline of democracy” in the country. A representative of the European Commission (EC) told the publication Politico.
The source said that Brussels is discussing “all options, including a possible temporary cancellation of visa liberalization.” According to him, the Georgian authorities must fulfill certain requirements in order to further integrate into the EU, including ensuring the protection of citizens’ rights and combating discrimination.
“The necessary assessment will be carried out in the event of such a development of events that will pose a risk to the internal security of the Schengen area, as well as in the event of a further decline in democracy in Georgia,” he stressed.
Earlier, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze said that Georgia will not allow large countries to use it like Ukraine. According to him, peace will remain in Georgia, despite threats and sanctions pressure, and the country’s leadership will follow the interests of its people.
