BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, cannot run ads based on personal data and will need users’ consent under a confidential European Union privacy watchdog decision, a source familiar with the matter said this week. Tuesday.
The Irish privacy regulator, which will issue the final decision, has been given a month’s deadline by the European Data Protection Board to do so. Their ruling will likely include hefty fines, the source said.
On Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the board’s decisions do not directly order the company to change practices, but ask the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) to issue public orders that reflect its decisions, along with significant fines. Meta’s European headquarters are in Ireland.
