European Union, all seats now belong to the EPP
The right turn of the European Parliament is not only at its top, but also on the branches immediately below. The big losers from the nomination round of this January 2022 are the progressives, who in one fell swoop lose the presidency and a vice-president seat. The European People’s Party, orphan of Angela Merkel, proves to be still the strongest and largest European political force in the European Union. And it now has all the decisive cornerstones of Community policy in its hands.
The agreement between the EPP and the liberals of Renew Europe, which guaranteed an extra seat to the Eurogroup inspired by Emmanuel Macron, with the Greens penalized by one. Not by chance, with the current presidency of the French EU just starting. And above all, during the voting phase, another unexpected and perhaps unpredictable convergence, that between Polish liberals and sovereignists with the candidates.
European Parliament, what’s behind Castaldo’s failure to confirm (M5s)
This is also why Italy, which had already lost the lamentation David Sassoli, also loses a vice president. It is about Fabio Massimo Castaldo of the Five Star Movement, which has held that role with determination for five years. Doing it autonomously both within the European hemicycle, since it did not have any group behind it since the M5s remained outside the formations of the European Parliament, and sometimes within its political force. This is demonstrated, among other things, by the skeptical stances on China when in Italy his colleagues still followed a very pro-Beijing line.
Castaldo remained if he had to deal with a candidate of the greens. “Friendly fire” also due to what were probably errors in the negotiation tactic. Enter instead Pina Picierno of the Democratic Party, belonging to the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) of the European Parliament.
Total victory of the People even without Merkel, Macronian-sovereign convergence during the vote
But the en plein of the Popular is still practically total. In addition to the president of the EU Parliament, the Maltese Roberta Metsola, the EPP also collected the first vicarious vice-presidency. Retain the Secretary General and all the top positions of the EU: presidency of the European Commission, presidency of the Eurogroup, ECB, European Court of Auditors. All in the hands of the EPP.
Progressives come out with broken bones and totally empty hands. They hoped at least to get the general secretariat, but the Popolari have not moved on Klaus Welle and they won it. For the liberals there is some embarrassment, even for Metsola’s talked about positions on abortion. It is significant, among other things, that all this happens while Social Democrats and progressives are winning elections almost everywhere in European countries.
Progressives defeated, even if in the member countries the Social Democrats win
Starting from Germany, where the traffic light coalition ousted Angela Merkel’s CDU from the chancellery and the government a few weeks ago. But also elsewhere the center left it is almost always in government, including Italy. But in the EU, representation is limited. The EPP has Ursula von der Leyen and the Irishman Paschal Donohoe. The liberals retain the presidency of the European Council with the Belgian Charles Michel, while the socialists have to settle for the High Representative for Foreign Policy, the Spaniard Josep Borrell.
From today, the navel of the European Union is much more to the right than before.
