Ethiopia UN calls for immediate ceasefire in Ethiopia – Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs urges Finns to leave the country immediately

The rebels have said they can take over the country’s capital in months if not weeks.

Mixed The UN Security Council and the Twitter messaging service have responded to Ethiopia’s deteriorating state of war. In a war that lasted about a year, the Ethiopian government has attacked the TPLF rebels who rule the north of the country. In recent days, TPLF troops have advanced towards the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

The UN Security Council called for an immediate ceasefire in Ethiopia on Friday. The ceasefire demand was also supported by Council members Russia and China, who see the Ethiopian war as a matter of principle.

The Security Council also called for abstention from hate speech. The parties to the Ethiopian war, as well as foreign Ethiopians concerned about the situation, have reacted strongly to the situation on social media.

Different parties support groups have set up various social media campaigns during the war.

On the night before Saturday, Finnish time, the message service Twitter, which was used as a platform for the campaigns, also reacted to the situation. According to Twitter, incitement to violence and dehumanization are against its terms of use. The company announced that it has disabled “trends,” i.e., the most regionally eye-catching topic tags in Ethiopia.

Finland The Ministry for Foreign Affairs has called on all Finns in Ethiopia to leave the country immediately.

In total about thirty Finns have notified the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs that they will leave Ethiopia in the coming days, the ministry says.

According to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, 90 travel declarations have been made to Ethiopia.

Commercial flights are still operational, according to the ministry, but Addis Ababa airport is expected to be congested in the coming days. The ministry says flights should be pursued as quickly as possible and that everyone procures and pays for their own flights.

During previous unrest, internet access and cellular networks have been restricted or shut down in the country. This can happen again this time.

The Embassy of Finland is located in Ethiopia.

Swedish The Ministry for Foreign Affairs issued a similar call at the same time as the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs late Friday night. The Swedish Foreign Ministry estimates that there are 500-1,000 Swedes in the country.

Norway and the United States, for example, have also urged their citizens to leave Ethiopia as soon as possible.

Ethiopia has called on its former soldiers to fight the rebels. Nine anti-government forces have joined forces with the prime minister Abiy Ahmedin against the administration.

Warfare between the rebels and the central government began in Tigray in the north of the country about a year ago. Millions of people have been forced to flee the fighting, and more than 400,000 people are on the brink of famine, according to the BBC.

Ethiopia is the regional superpower of the so – called Horn of Africa and one of the largest countries on the continent. Its capital is the headquarters of the African Union.

Senior researcher, professor at the Nordic Africa Institute Liisa Laakso previously told BTI that the Horn of Africa is a geopolitically important region that is flanked by much of the world’s oil transportation and other maritime freight traffic.

The crisis in Ethiopia is not just an internal matter, but can have a wide range of spill-over effects on the country’s neighborhood and beyond.
